(1917-1997)
Paul Hayes was a native of Blackwell,
Oklahoma, started violin lessons at an early age, learning to play by ear. He
became a professional Singer, Fiddler at the young age of 15 years old.
His Career started at WMPD Radio in Peoria, Illinois (circa) 1932. After
a short period of time he then joined WLS Radio in Chicago, toured theaters and
performed on road shows in 48 states and Canada. His big “Break” came from
Andy Williams of Wall Lake, Iowa who later became a national recording and TV
star. Williams and his brothers who were a quartet on the “Iowa Barn Dance
Frolic” mentioned to Slim Hayes (while in Chicago) that there was an opening
on the Buckaroos band back in Des Moines, Iowa In 1940 he was hired at WHO Radio
and joined the “Borderland
Buckaroos” as fiddler, guitar and bass player. Later he took over the band and
named it “Slim Hayes and the “Buckaroos.
In the 1940’s and 50’s Slim and the band sang and picked, as regulars on WHO
Radio, Iowa Barn Dance frolic. In
1954 “Slim” started a children’s TV show on WHO TV-channel 13, called the
“Lucky 13 Ranch”, it was broadcast 5 days a week on channel #13, and it ran
for over eight years. In 1962 he returned to WHO Radio as a DJ and had a very
popular country music show. “Slim”
past away on October 30, 1997 at the age of 80 years old. Paul P. Hayes was one
of the biggest names in country music in the Midwest for over 65 years. Paul was
survived by his wife Millie, a daughter Sandy (Hayes) Crawford, and a son Denny
Hayes, all of Des Moines, Iowa.
